Michael had met a girl name Trista who had nothing to do with his job and he like that about her. Considering the girl he did fall for in the MI disappeared with no word. After dating for almost a year Trista became pregnant during this time things became rocky in their relationship. A year after Ryan was born he decided she wasn't ready to be a mother or be with Michael anymore. So he raised Ryan on his own. He hasn't dated since her and puts most of his attention on his son and his job and keeping a close relationship with his brother Mark.
